Accountants Gone Wild
Accounting & Business Services Going Through Labor Shortages
Private sector employment grew 41,000 jobs in December, with pay up 4.4% year-over-year, led by education, health, and leisure services. Professional and business services, including accounting, lost 29,000 jobs despite labor shortages and slower job switching.
Small and medium businesses are driving most gains, while goods-producing industries are falling slightly. ADP economist Nela Richardson noted overhiring way back 2023–2024 and said AI may help offset accounting labor shortages, though unevenly instead of hiring people.

What toppled Chicago’s most feared gangster — bullets or ledgers?
The notorious gangster who ruled Chicago wasn’t caught for bootlegging or murder — he was convicted for tax evasion. IRS agent Frank J. Wilson and his team followed money prints, tracking Capone’s gambling profits, hidden bank accounts, and lavish lifestyle.
In 1931, Capone faced 22 counts of tax evasion and 11 years in federal prison. The irony? The man who bribed officials and dodged the law for years was stopped by ledgers instead.
Lesson for accountants: Crime might pay… but accounting always wins.

9th Circuit Denies Rehearing Appeal on Trump’s Federal Layoffs
The 9th Circuit denied rehearing Trump’s February 2025 Executive Order 14210, directing large-scale federal layoffs. Federal unions claim it exceeds presidential authority and violates the APA, while panels allowed discovery of agency layoff plans, rejecting privilege claims.
Discovery continues in district court, including OMB Director Russell Vought and former agency head Elon Musk. Judges stressed the need for evidence, though dissent warned it weakens protections. The court will now assess the legality of the agency-specific layoff plans.
