Federal Jobs Currently Experiences Layoff Risk as Budget Standoff Threatens Shutdown

The White House office warned agencies of mass layoffs if Congress fails to pass funding by Sept. 30, with an Oct. 1 shutdown placed to discharge workers. An OMB memo directs cuts to programs outside Trump’s priorities, risking permanent job losses.

The House passed a stopgap bill, however the Senate rejected it as Democrats pushed for ACA subsidies and Republicans wanted a short-term fix. Both parties condemn each other, accusing Trump of politicizing layoffs. The OMB hopes a shutdown can be avoided.

Electronic Payments Now Mandated for  Paper Tax Refunds Beginning September

The IRS now discontinues paper refund checks, moving nearly all taxpayers to electronic payments by 2026 under Trump’s Executive Order 14247. About 93% already use direct deposit, while the 7% on paper checks are shifting to digital payment options.

Paper checks are 16 times more likely to be lost, stolen, or delayed, while noting e-payments are faster, safer, and cheaper. Exceptions will be allowed for taxpayers without banking access or in hardship cases, though AICPA has asked the Treasury on extended transitions.
